Cloud Connector is an Azure Managed Application that pulls data from cloud APIs and on-premises databases on a schedule, lands it in a data warehouse or lakehouse, runs transformations, and refreshes Power BI semantic models. You configure everything in a web UI. Downstream systems can also drive loads through a small REST API, and Power BI and other tools can read the loaded data back through the Data API.

It runs in your own Azure subscription: the deployment is a locked resource group that you can read and that Datawareness can reach for support and maintenance.

What you can connect

SourceHow it is read
Cloud REST APIsGET or POST endpoints returning JSON, XML, CSV or Excel, with session-bearer (OAuth 2.0 client credentials), basic, bearer, header, query-parameter or Microsoft sign-in authentication, and body, header or cursor paging. See Endpoints.
Business CentralThrough Datawareness's BI Endpoints app: pick entity sets from a catalogue and get full, incremental and delete loads set up in one click. See Business Central.
SharePoint OnlineExcel workbooks (sheets or named tables), CSV, JSON, XML and text files in document libraries. See SharePoint Online.
On-premises SQL Server and ODBCThe Cloud Connector Gateway, a Windows service that pushes data out over HTTPS with Change Tracking, watermark or snapshot change detection. Nothing connects in.
Inbound webhooksExternal systems POST rows into a dataset. See Inbound webhooks.

Where the data goes

  • SQL Server — Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance, or SQL Server on a VM or on-premises. Tables are created and widened for you, deletions are removed or kept and flagged, and large exports to Azure SQL Database can use bulk loading. See Export systems.
  • Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse (Standard and Enterprise) — Delta tables, written with a service principal.
  • The Data API — a read-only, paged endpoint per dataset that Power BI, Excel and scripts read with Entra ID tokens, governed by Data access roles. See Data API.

What runs it

  • Jobs — pipelines in three phases: actions and stored procedures before, dataset refreshes, then transformations and Power BI refreshes after.
  • Schedules — cron expressions that run one or more jobs, in order or in parallel groups.
  • Actions — reusable HTTP requests and SQL stored procedures, including refreshing a Power BI semantic model.
  • Notifications — failure and warning emails, and outbound webhooks on job and schedule events.
  • Environments — separate Dev, Test and Prod copies, with configuration packages and environment compare to promote changes.
  • AI assistance (Standard and Enterprise) — import endpoints from API documentation, suggest a business key, and build data filters from a plain description.

The components

Cloud Connector ships as three cloud components deployed together, plus two optional companions:

  • Backend (Node.js) — the REST API the UI talks to, and the keeper of all configuration.
  • Service (Python) — the scheduler and worker. Runs cron-driven schedules, executes jobs, calls source endpoints, writes to export systems.
  • UI (React) — the web interface these pages mostly describe.
  • Cloud Connector Gateway (optional) — a Windows service installed in your network that pushes on-premises SQL Server and ODBC data to the cloud. See On-prem Gateway.
  • BI Endpoints (optional) — a Business Central app by Datawareness that publishes a catalogue of entity sets. Cloud Connector reads it to set up Business Central datasets in a few clicks. See Business Central.

See Architecture for how they fit together.
